Madeira Photography Tour

Portugal’s Floating Garden of the Atlantic

Madeira is a geographic gem that rises out of the Atlantic about 600 miles west of Morocco. It’s a mountainous, volcanic island shaped by wind, water and time, and infused with the warmth and charm of  Portuguese culture. For photographers, it offers an extraordinary range of landscapes—from steep cliffs dropping into the ocean to narrow valleys rising into the mountains and mist drifting through ancient laurel forests.

Madeira offers remarkable variety within a small area. In a single day you might photograph sunrise above a sea of clouds in the mountains, spend the afternoon along rugged coastal cliffs and finish the evening in a colorful harbor.

DSCF0718 Edit

This small-group Madeira photography tour is designed to work with the island’s constantly changing weather and light. With two professional photographer guides, the itinerary remains nimble and adaptable to changing conditions and fleeting opportunities. Our days often begin before sunrise and end after sunset. Between those moments we explore forests, coastlines, mountain ridges and villages—looking for scenes that reveal the diverse character of the island. Along the way we focus on composition, light and the practical techniques that help translate a landscape into a strong photograph.

Who This Trip Is For

This tour is designed for photographers who enjoy landscape and travel photography, dynamic weather and working with natural light. Walks are generally short and manageable. Some optional hikes follow uneven mountain paths, but no long hikes are required. The island’s elevation ranges from sea level to over 6,000 feet, so temperatures and conditions can change quickly. The tour works well for enthusiastic amateurs through experienced photographers.

What you will photograph

Landscapes: Sea cliffs, volcanic coastlines, waterfalls, laurel forests, mountain ridges above the clouds,  and dramatic Atlantic skies.

Natural Details: Forest textures, moss-covered branches, rock formations, reflections, and smaller scenes shaped by light and weather.

Cultural Elements: Fishing harbors, traditional houses, village streets, and daily life along Madeira’s coast.

Recommended camera gear

Cameras: While most participants on our tours use DSLR or mirrorless cameras with interchangeable lenses, any other camera system is welcome, including 35mm film, bridge cameras, point and shoot or even smartphones. Drones are not permitted on this tour. Our leaders are familiar with all camera systems and can help you with most settings and features.

Lenses: (focal lengths listed in 35mm equivalent)

  • Wide angles (15–35mm)
  • Standard zoom (24–70mm)
  • Telephoto zoom (70-200mm or up to 100–500mm)

Support: Tripod recommended for long exposures and low-light conditions.

Protection: Spare batteries, microfiber cloths and rain protection for non-weather sealed cameras are all recommended.

Filters: Polarizing filter(s) that fit all lenses are highly recommended. ND filters for long exposures may also be useful for capturing motion in seascapes and clouds.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1
Arrive Madeira
Arrive on the island of Madeira and transfer to our hotel in Porto de Câmara de Lobos west of the main town of Funchal. Early arrivals may wish to explore the harbor or the historic streets of the old town. We gather in the evening for a welcome dinner and tour orientation. (D)

Days 2 - 6
Madeira Photography
Over the next five days we explore some of the most photogenic landscapes in Madeira, from dramatic coastal cliffs to high mountain viewpoints and misty forests.
São Lourenço Península
At the eastern tip of the island, volcanic ridges stretch into the Atlantic. Sunrise light reveals layered cliffs, sea stacks, and turquoise water below.
Pico do Areeiro and Mountain Ridges
One of Madeira’s highest viewpoints offers sweeping views above the clouds. Ridges glow with early light as fog moves through the valleys below. From the summit of Pico do Areeiro, you can see a chain of jagged volcanic peaks stretching toward Pico Ruivo, often rising above a shifting sea of clouds.
Fanal Forest
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the ancient laurel trees of Fanal stand across open meadows in Madeira’s high forests. When fog drifts through the branches the landscape becomes quiet and atmospheric, ideal for minimalist and abstract compositions. Local folklore sometimes describes the fog moving through these twisted trees as spirits wandering the ancient forest.
Ribeira da Janela and the North Coast
Sea stacks rise from the Atlantic along Madeira’s rugged northern shoreline. Long exposures capture waves breaking around volcanic rock formations.
Porto Moniz and Seixal
Volcanic pools and black-sand beaches create strong foregrounds for sunset photography along the island’s northwest coast.
Depending on weather and light, evenings may include harbor and street scenes in Funchal, coastal viewpoints, or returning to earlier locations under different conditions and times of day. (BLD)

Day 7
Depart Madeira
After breakfast, depart for home at any time. (B)
