Mongolia Photography Tour

Eagle Hunters, Wild Horses & Nomadic Life

Mongolia remains one of the world’s last great open landscapes and one of the most rewarding destinations in Asia for landscape, wildlife, and cultural photography. Vast steppe valleys stretch to distant mountains, nomadic families move with their herds across wide grasslands, and ancient traditions remain part of everyday life.

This Mongolia Photography Tour explores both the cultural heritage and wild landscapes of the country, offering exceptional opportunities for wildlife and cultural photography in Mongolia. From the historic capital of Ulaanbaatar to the Altai Mountains of western Mongolia and the remote valleys of the Khentii region, the journey offers a wide range of photographic experiences.

Traveling in small groups by four-wheel-drive vehicles, we photograph Mongolia’s remarkable diversity—wild horses roaming the steppe, Kazakh eagle hunters practicing centuries-old traditions, Buddhist monasteries, and expansive mountain landscapes.

Our itinerary remains flexible so we can work with changing light and weather while exploring the country’s most compelling photographic locations.

Mongolia for Photographers

Mongolia offers an extraordinary range of photographic subjects across vast and largely untouched landscapes. Open steppe valleys stretch for hundreds of miles, nomadic families move seasonally with their livestock, and traditional cultures remain closely connected to the land. For photographers, the country provides remarkable variety—from wildlife roaming the grasslands to the high peaks of the Altai Mountains and the forested valleys of the Khentii region. Changing weather, expansive skies, and minimal light pollution create excellent conditions for landscape, wildlife, and night photography. Because Mongolia’s landscapes remain sparsely populated, photographers often work in wide open environments where natural light and uncluttered compositions define the scene.

Photography Opportunities in Mongolia

Wildlife: Takhi wild horses, deer, gazelles, wolves, and steppe birdlife.

Nomadic Culture: Kazakh eagle hunters, traditional Mongolian herders, Buddhist monks, and everyday life across the steppe.

Landscapes: The Altai Mountains, vast steppe valleys, sand dunes, river meadows, and dramatic skies across western Mongolia.

History and Architecture: Historic monasteries, stone memorial monuments, and the central squares and monuments of Ulaanbaatar.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1
Arrive Ulaanbaatar
Arrive in Mongolia’s capital city and transfer to our hotel. The hotel is close to Sukhbaatar Square, the historic center of the city, where statues of Genghis Khan and other national figures overlook the square. The open plaza and surrounding architecture offer opportunities for city photography and evening light.
Accommodation: Hotel in Ulaanbaatar

Day 2
Ulaanbaatar
We begin the day with a visit to Gandan Monastery, Mongolia’s most important Buddhist monastery. Monks gather for morning prayers, creating opportunities to photograph traditional robes, prayer wheels, and temple architecture.
Later we visit the Mongol Nekhmel Factory, known for producing garments made from cashmere, yak, and camel wool, offering an interesting look into Mongolia’s textile traditions.
Accommodation: Hotel in Ulaanbaatar

Day 3
Ulaanbaatar to Hustai National Park
We travel west toward Hustai National Park, stopping along the way at the Danshig Naadam Games on the Hui Doloon Hudag plains. The festival features traditional horse racing, archery, and wrestling alongside Buddhist ceremonies and masked dances.
In the afternoon we continue to Hustai National Park, where evening wildlife drives offer our first opportunities to photograph Takhi wild horses, deer, gazelles, marmots, and large steppe birds such as the cinereous vulture.
Accommodation: Ger camp near Hustai National Park

Day 4
Hustai National Park
Early morning offers the best conditions for wildlife photography across the steppe landscapes. With luck we may photograph jerboas and other nocturnal wildlife before sunrise.
Later we explore the park’s diverse terrain of forested ridges, open steppe, and scenic gullies with views toward the Moltsog Sand Dunes. The day may also include a visit to Balbal stone monuments, ancient memorial markers dating back many centuries.
Accommodation: Ger camp

Day 5
Return to Ulaanbaatar
After a final morning wildlife drive in Hustai National Park we return to Ulaanbaatar. En route we stop at Zaisan Hill, which provides panoramic views over the city and surrounding mountains.
Accommodation: Hotel in Ulaanbaatar

Day 6
Fly to Western Mongolia – Altai Region
We fly west to Ölgii, the center of Mongolia’s Kazakh community. From here we travel by Land Cruiser into the Altai Mountains toward the communities of Altantsogts or Tolbo.
The landscape opens into wide valleys beneath the snow-capped peaks of Tsambagarav Mountain, where we set up our wilderness ger camp near families who practice traditional eagle hunting.
Accommodation: Wilderness ger camp

Day 7
Kazakh Eagle Hunters
Today we spend time with local Kazakh families, photographing daily life, livestock, and the remarkable partnership between hunters and their trained golden eagles.
Portraits of hunters in traditional clothing, horseback scenes, and interactions between families and their birds offer powerful cultural photography opportunities.
Accommodation: Wilderness ger camp

Day 8
Altai Mountain Landscapes
We explore the dramatic landscapes surrounding the Tsambagarav Mountains, photographing nomadic camps and grazing animals beneath the high peaks.
Depending on conditions we may also visit nearby valleys with striking granite formations and desert-steppe scenery.
Accommodation: Wilderness ger camp

Day 9
Return to Ulaanbaatar – Jalman Meadows
After flying back to Ulaanbaatar we continue northeast into the Khentii Mountains. The drive follows wide steppe valleys dotted with nomadic camps and herds of livestock before crossing larch-forested mountain passes into the Upper Tuul River Valley. These are the winter pastures of the local herdsmen, but summer can bring a profusion of wildflowers.
At Jalman Meadows our luggage is transported by yak carts to the ger camp set along the river.
Accommodation: Jalman Meadows ger camp

Day 10
Jalman Meadows
Morning mist often settles over the valley, creating beautiful conditions for early landscape photography.
During the day we explore the river valley on foot, horseback, or by floating the Tuul River in small inflatable boats. The surrounding mountains are covered with larch and birch forests, and the region supports birdlife including the rare black-billed capercaillie.
With minimal light pollution, the valley also offers excellent conditions for night photography and star-filled skies.
Accommodation: Jalman Meadows ger camp

Day 11
Return to Ulaanbaatar
After a final morning in the valley we return to Ulaanbaatar. Along the way we visit the impressive Genghis Khan Equestrian Statue, the largest monument of its kind in the world.
