Death Valley National Park

Death Valley in Winter

Death Valley is the largest national park in the contiguous United States. Within the park we can stand on terrain that has been etched by time and explore not just an inspiring physical landscape, but a mental and spiritual one as well.

Death Valley is a place shaped by wind and water and is expressed through light and shadow. The raw elements that characterize this extraordinary place lead to a more contemplative way of photographing. It’s a place of quiet exploration and connecting to the Earth and its history, laid bare but still mysterious.

During the week, we’ll catch the changing palette of sunrise at Zabriskie Point, where our vantage point offers excellent views of the Panamint Range, the spire of Manly Beacon, and the ancient bed of prehistoric Lake Manly. We’ll venture out into the salt flats of Badwater Basin, 282 feet below sea level to shoot first light on Telescope Peak, and photograph along the famed Artist’s Drive where multi-hued landscapes offer countless compositions. We’ll also experience sunrise and sunset from Dante’s View, located over 5,000 feet above Badwater Basin for an unforgettable perspective between earth and sky. If conditions are favorable, we’ll also capture beautifully sculpted sand dunes and starry skies over ancient rock formations.

December is one of the coolest and clearest months in Death Valley when it undergoes a remarkable transformation, turning from a scorching landscape into a desert paradise. The low-angle sun of winter enhances the dramatic interplay of light and shadow across the vast expanse of the valley, creating stunning visual contrasts.

Our base is the renowned Oasis at Death Valley, situated in the heart of Death Valley National Park. Following its renovation in 2018, the property now offers modern lodging options, including comfortable cottages. From this single convenient hub, we embark on daily adventures to explore the park’s immense 3.4 million acres, each corner brimming with captivating scenic diversity.

Come with us in December as we pursue the ephemeral light from sunrise to sunset and beyond, photographing in the best landscape locations Death Valley National Park has to offer. On this trip during the first week of December 2024, the “new moon” allows a dark sky and the possibility of exciting astral photography of the Milky Way.
