Nordic Autumn and Aurora

Lofoten, Lyngen Alps and Sweden’s Abisko National Park

Nordic landscapes are some of the most beautiful on Earth, instilled with unparalleled environmental purity. Within this region of northern Europe, Norway is arguably the most alluring to those who see the world through the lens of a camera. Compared to the relatively flat topography of neighboring Sweden and Finland, Norway’s dramatic mountains and intricate coastal fjords provide more dynamic landscapes and weather. More specifically, the northern region of Norway that includes the Lyngen Alps and the renowned Lofoten Archipelago, is the embodiment of Nordic ambiance – rugged yet charming, vigorous yet tranquil.

lofoten day 1 2

Our new tour of this stunning region is based on years of accumulated experience gained from our traditional winter tours, but now with the added value and potential of autumn. According to the locals, autumn is quietly heralded as the absolute best time to visit and to photograph. The idyllic combination of subject material, location access, climate, quality of light and aurora activity come together to create a photographic, Nordic nirvana. Another key benefit of autumn is avoiding the crush of numerous photo groups from Europe and Asia that crowd prime shooting locations in winter.

Along with the rugged coastlines and mountains, quaint fishing villages, picturesque harbors and northern lights we’ve traditionally captured in winter, we can now add lakes, waterfalls, colorful forests and vegetation in autumn. And given the low arc of the sun at this time of year, one golden hour is more like two, and midday sun (only 22° above the horizon) allows for good shooting all day long. Best of all, this wider range of subject material can be captured and enjoyed in more agreeable fall temperatures and on more solid ground, free of ice and snow.

Local word suggests that this is perhaps the best time of year to see and photograph the aurora as well. Both scientific data and historical narrative agree that more geomagnetic storms occur on average around the spring and autumn equinox, due to the tilt of the Earth and its resulting orientation to the Sun. This biannual alignment causes a more dynamic interaction between solar winds, Earth’s magnetic field and the gases in our upper atmosphere, resulting in more frequent auroral displays. The potential for photographing aurora activity in relatively comfortable temperatures, perhaps reflected in still, unfrozen lakes, holds a big advantage over doing so in the icy depths of Arctic winter.

Our new Nordic Autumn and Aurora tour is designed to cover a lot of ground but with a classically Norwegian mindset of quality over quantity. During an extended itinerary of 7 full days of shooting, we’ll visit iconic locations in Lofoten; dramatic peaks and secluded corners of the Lyngen Alps and for the first time, Abisko National Park just over the border in Sweden. Abisko holds potential for rich autumn color and for some of the best aurora viewing on earth. Not to be forgotten, every one of our 7 nights above the Arctic Circle will hold the potential for amazing aurora displays. Whether you haven’t visited this stunning region of the world, or if you’ve joined us on a previous winter tour, this new autumn adventure is designed to take full advantage of the best Nordic locations at the best time of the year. But don’t just take our word for it, ask the locals!
