Tour Itinerary

Puma Photography Tour Details

Day 1
October 12
All participants arrive in Punta Arenas, Chile. We transfer to our tour hotel in Punta Arenas and gather for a welcome dinner with our tour leader and local guide. (D)

Day 2
We check out of our hotel in the morning and drive northwest from Punta Arenas along the Ruta del Fin del Mundo (the Highway to the End of the World), through impressive scenery on all sides. We stop for lunch in Puerto Natales, a formerly modest fishing port considered the gateway to Torres del Paine National Park. Post-lunch, we drive on to Cerro Castillo, named after the majestic peak visible from the village, and check into our charming, vaquero-themed hotel. (BLD)

Days 3 - 6
From first light, trackers fan out across the wind‑swept steppe and Andean foothills, tuning into subtle habitat cues. This tour involves both easy and moderate walks and involves a basic level of fitness to keep pace with the group. You follow the trackers by 4×4 and on foot, moving quietly into vantage points where “Puma concolor patagonica”—the largest of its subspecies—carries out hunting and territorial patrols.

Thriving guanaco herds underpin this ecosystem, sustaining healthy puma populations and creating some of the world’s best conditions for truly wild wildlife photography. Mid‑morning, cats retreat to shaded thickets; you’ll picnic beneath lenga pines or return to the lodge for a hot lunch before reconvening for late‑afternoon tracking. (BLD)

Days 7 - 8
Transfer to Hotel Rio Serrano in Torres del Paine. Dedicate each sunrise and sunset to landscape compositions: the “Horns” aglow at dawn, the “Towers” mirrored in glacial lagoons at dusk, and carpets of wildflowers framing endless steppe. Guides explain how seasonal winds sculpt cloud patterns over jagged peaks and why certain light angles reveal hidden geological features. (BLD)

Day 9
Travel to a remote cliffside Andean condor roost. Up to 100 giant birds wheel on thermal currents, offering flight shots against a backdrop of mountain ridges. Afterward, return to Punta Arenas for a final group dinner. (BLD)

Day 10
October 21
Transfer to Punta Arenas Airport (PUQ) for departure flights. (B)

Testimonials

My best photography that I have ever done has been on Van Os trips.
—Gary H.

I have had a great time on all of my trips and the photographs have exceeded my expectations. Each site overwhelmed me with possibilities of things to photograph. Looking at photographs taken by the guides gave me additional ideas and inspiration.
—Wally T.

I’m just one of a great number of tour participants, yet always felt as though your service and support was personal and, of course, always courteous and helpful. It’s so nice to receive excellent service from an organization with which one is engaging.
