Lower Zambezi Michael Laubscher WIld Eye 12

Lower Zambezi National Park stretches along the northern bank of the Zambezi River. Once a private presidential game reserve before its designation as a national park in 1983, this area remains pristine. Its remoteness and shared borders with a vast game management area enhance its wildness. The park is renowned for its startling beauty and dense wildlife populations. Predators and prey alike gather along the riverbanks, drawn by the life-giving waters. The region is also nirvana for bird enthusiasts, featuring diverse species such as the African fish eagles, secretarybirds, and bee-eaters. Lions, hippos, hyenas, and wild dogs roam its terrain.

Imagine capturing the luminous mist rising over Busanga at sunrise, the intense gaze of a lioness in perfect light, or the striking patterns of a leopard draped over a low-hanging branch along the Kafue River. Kafue National Park is one of the largest and oldest national parks in Africa and forms part of the world’s most expansive transboundary conservation region: the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area. (KAZA TFCA). It serves as critical sanctuary for African savanna elephants. The park boasts an array of habitats, from dense woodlands to open floodplains -supporting cheetahs, wild dogs, and elusive servals.

Within Kafue National Park, the seasonal wetland ecosystem of Busanga Plains transforms into lush grasslands for several months each year, attracting an abundance of wildlife. In the dry season, animals are concentrated around permanent water sources, making for superb viewing. Home to 158 mammal species, including 21 antelopes such as roan, sable, Sharpe’s grysbok, hartebeests, and blue duikers, Kafue offers remarkable biodiversity. Over 500 bird species have been recorded here, including Zambia’s only endemic bird, Chaplin’s barbet, along with multiple kingfishers, Pel’s fishing owl, and the black-cheeked lovebird.
