Rwanda Photography Tour

Mountain Gorillas, Akagera Safari & Volcanoes National Park

An experience with Mountain Gorillas in the wild is transformative. Nothing can prepare you for the impact of this experience. The gorillas emerge into view from dense forest – suddenly at close range, engaged in their activities, yet highly aware of your presence. Adult Mountain Gorillas can be massive, with unbelievable strength, yet their demeanor is often calm, graceful and deliberate. They are among our closest relatives, with social bonds and expressions that feel deeply familiar.

“Gorilla beringei beringei” is one of two endangered subspecies of the eastern gorilla and one of the world’s largest living primates. At close range, an encounter with a gorilla individual or family group is extraordinary and reveals the gorillas’ acute level of guarded awareness. It is the gorillas’ physical presence and intelligence, combined with both their familiarity and otherness, that helps make this experience so rare—and so profound.

Photographing the Mountain Gorillas includes working quietly within their space, often in soft, filtered forest light. Movements and interactions can unfold deliberately, or abruptly, affected by the rhythm of the group and the density of the forest. You’ll experience the potent scent of musk and crushed leaves, the quiet sounds of communication and feeding, and the unreal awareness of being among them.

This Rwanda Photography Tour combines two of the country’s most compelling regions: the wildlife-rich savannas of Akagera National Park and the iconic, mist-covered slopes of Volcanoes National Park in the Virunga Mountains. Together, they offer a range of thrilling photographic opportunities—from a breathtaking safari wildlife experience to intimate and profound encounters with Mountain Gorillas. We begin in Kigali, before traveling to Akagera National Park, where lakes, wetlands, and open plains support Savanna Elephant, Masai Giraffe, Cape Buffalo, many species of antelope, and abundant birdlife. Akagera is a true conservation success story with the numbers of introduced lions, and both black and white rhinos, increasing yearly. From here, we continue north to Volcanoes National Park, home to approximately half of the world’s remaining Mountain Gorillas.

Over five trekking days, we photograph habituated gorilla families in the mountain forests with experienced trackers. Traveling in a small group with expert photographic guidance, this journey is designed to create meaningful images while experiencing one of Africa’s most extraordinary wildlife encounters. Led by Joe and Mary Ann McDonald, two of North America’s most experienced wildlife photography leaders, with over 50 combined years in the field and 116 mountain gorilla treks in Rwanda between them.

Photography Opportunities in Rwanda

Rwanda offers a unique photographic experience centered on close encounters with wildlife in natural and often intimate environments. The Virunga Mountains provide a dramatic backdrop of mist, forest, and volcanic peaks, while Akagera offers classic African wildlife scenes across open landscapes and from the water. Together, these regions allow photographers to work across a wide range of conditions—from low-angle wildlife photography on the savanna and along the water’s edge, to close-up portraiture in dense rainforest.

  • Wildlife and Birds—African Savanna Elephant, Masai Giraffe, Cape Buffalo, antelope such as Cape Eland, Topi and Bushbuck; birdlife, such as Hamerkop, African Fish Eagle and Lilac-Breasted Roller.
  • Primate Encounters—5 treks for multiple times with habituated Mountain Gorilla families.
  • Landscapes—Volcanic mountains, rainforest, lakes, and open savanna. Terraced farm fields of pyrethrum plants.
  • Culture & History—Traditional cultural dancers and the Kigali Genocide Memorial.
