Tanzania Wildlife Photography Safari

Serengeti Calving Season and Ngorongoro Crater

February is calving season on the Serengeti’s southern plains. Roughly 8,000 wildebeest calves are born each day at the peak of the season, drawing the highest concentration of predators in the East African calendar—cheetah mothers hunting newborns, lion prides working the herd margins, hyena clans at dawn. This 12-day photo safari follows the action across three zones: the kopje country of the central Serengeti, the calving grounds around Lake Ndutu, and the wildlife-dense floor of the Ngorongoro Crater.

The foundational difference is vehicle setup. A maximum of three photographers per vehicle means everyone has a clear roof hatch, the guide’s attention, and room to reposition without crowding anyone’s frame. Dual permits covering both Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area simultaneously let the group cross park boundaries to follow the herds—an arrangement that is unusual, and essential for calving season photography.

Led by Joe and Mary Ann McDonald, two of North America’s most experienced wildlife photography leaders, with over 50 combined years in the field and 116 mountain gorilla treks in Rwanda between them.

Photography Opportunities in Tanzania

Photographers focused on wildlife behavior, predator-prey interaction, and fast-moving situations. Suitable for intermediate to advanced photographers, and beginners who are comfortable working quickly and spending full days in the field.

What you will photograph

  • Wildlife—Wildebeest calving, zebra and other migrating herds of animals, cheetah, lion, hyena, elephant, giraffe, and eastern black rhino.
  • Landscapes and culture—Southern Serengeti plains, granite kopjes, Lake Ndutu, acacia woodlands, and the Ngorongoro Crater.

What makes this tour different

  • Photography-first flexibility—Daily routes flex around light, weather, herd movement, road conditions, and guide and leader intelligence. Each day is shaped in the field to stay with the strongest photographic opportunities.
  • Signature locations and species—Central Serengeti kopjes (ancient granite formations, some adorned by candelabra trees), the Ndutu calving grounds, Gol and Moru Kopjes, and the Ngorongoro Crater. Wildebeest calving, cheetah, lion, hyena, and elephant define the experience.
  • Small-group instruction—A maximum of three photographers per vehicle ensures everyone has a clear roof hatch, the guide’s attention, and room to reposition without crowding the frame.
  • Landscapes, wildlife, and cultural context—Open plains, granite kopjes, wooded lake edges, and the enclosed crater ecosystem create a varied photographic environment shaped by wildlife movement.
  • Seamless logistics—Same driver/guides throughout, coordinated bush flights, and dual park permits allow efficient movement and maximum time in the field.
