Patagonia's Mountain Landscapes in Austral Autumn

Torres del Paine, Fitzroy Massif & Cerro Torre in the Southern Autumn

Comparable in size to Washington, Oregon and California, the flat temperate desert plain of Patagonia rises to meet the jagged granite spires of the Southern Andes. Verdant forests, fed by the meltwaters of an 8,000-square-mile ice cap to the west, surround pristine lakes that are considered to be among the world’s most beautiful. Images of craggy snowcapped peaks lie reflected in the cold, blue water. Massive glaciers grind on their slow course, calving blue icebergs into jewel-like lakes.

Our Patagonia tour concentrates on panoramic landscape and wildlife imagery in two incredible national parks. We shoot in the spectacular mountainous region of the Andes at Los Glaciares National Park where we should have outstanding photo opportunities at the Fitzroy Massif (11,073 feet) and Cerro Torre (10,280 feet). In the Patagonian autumn, beech forests provide a fiery colorful contrast to the landscape.

The second photographic highlight is our days spent at the foot of the dramatic peaks of the “Towers” and “Horns” of Torres del Paine National Park. The tumultuous weather of the southern hemisphere’s autumn season produces a wide variety of dramatic lighting conditions. We have plenty of time to photograph these magnificent mountains in the wondrous light of sunrise and sunset. Unwary Patagonian foxes and guanacos provide exciting wildlife photography experiences—and it is not uncommon to see condors, eagles and other birds of prey during our travels. We also organize a photo session of gauchos driving horses across grasslands.

Join us for a journey to a place called a “Living Eden” in a stunning documentary filmed for public television. The mountains of Patagonia provide some of the world’s most inspiring scenic photography and are a destination all serious nature photographers should shoot at least once in a lifetime!

The jagged spine of the Andes is the backdrop for this—one of the world's most magnificent wilderness areas. We are provided with awesome views of Fitzroy and Cerro Torre. On the last day of your Patagonia in Autumn tour, fly with the group from Buenos Aires to Santiago (approx. 2.5 hrs). Check into your 4-star airport hotel and enjoy dinner. A guide will meet the group and assist you with your flight to Easter Island (Rapa Nui) the following morning.
Rapa Nui is the Polynesian name for a volcanic wedge of land just 25 km long and 12 km wide, lying 3,500 km (2,200 miles) off the coast of Chile – the most remote inhabited island on Earth.
Better known as Easter Island, Rapa Nui is synonymous with mystery. For centuries anthropologists wondered how so few people on a remote, treeless, and impoverished island could have made and transported hundreds of eerie, gargantuan statues, – called moai. The awe-inspiring, multi-ton stone statues, some standing 12 m (39 feet) tall and weighing more than 75 tons, were carved from the island’s quarry of compacted volcanic ash and then transported several miles over the island’s rugged terrain.
The story of how ancient Polynesians colonized this isolated speck of land, thrived for centuries, and then succumbed to the collapse of their environment offers a fascinating glimpse at humanity and a poignant travel experience. It is little wonder that Easter Island is often listed by travel magazines as one of the “must-see” destinations in the world. (D)

May 2, 2026
Take a morning flight to Easter Island, (approx. 5.5 hrs) and receive a traditional flower lei welcome. After hotel check-in and lunch, photograph the town’s colorful church, fishing pier, and artisan market. In the evening, enjoy sunset photography and a vibrant Rapa Nui cultural dinner and dance show. (BLD)

May 3, 2026
Photograph the volcanic crater of Rano Kau and visit Orongo, the cliffside village of the Birdman cult. Explore Ana Kai Tangata cave, then spend the afternoon photographing moai statues at various ahu, or ceremonial sites. Sunset shoot at Ahu Tahai. (BLD)

May 4, 2026
Sunrise shoot at Ahu Tongariki—15 moai lined in dramatic silhouette. Explore Rano Raraku quarry, where many moai remain unfinished. Visit Te Pito Kura, then end the day relaxing or photographing at Anakena Beach. (BLD)

May 5, 2026
Morning shoot at lesser-known natural sites, including lava caves and hidden moai. Afternoon free for personal exploration or rest. Optional night shoot beneath the stars with moai in the foreground. (BLD)
